Causes of Bad Breath

  • Dental problems: Cavities and pockets from gum disease give bad breath, it’s more like bacteria have extra places to hide in your mouth that are difficult to clear out when you’re brushing or cleaning your teeth. Both teeth and gum diseases can contribute to halitosis.

  • Mouth, Nose, & Throat Infections: Bad breath can be caused by nasal, throat, and sinus issues that lead to postnasal drip. Bacteria feed on mucus and the dead cells that your body produces when it’s battling a sinus infection, leaving you with a stingy mouth.

  • Dry mouth: Saliva plays a major role in your dental health – and thus your breath. It rinses away unwanted leftovers and helps to break down food by using natural enzymes, supplies minerals that help prevent cavities and infections, and provides disease-fighting substances. If you don’t make enough saliva, you could experience halitosis due to the lack of all the above factors. A dry mouth can be caused by medications, certain medical conditions, alcohol or tobacco use, or excessive caffeine intake.

  • Smoking and tobacco: Tobacco products wreak havoc on your entire body and the first victim is your mouth. Not only do many tobacco products leave their own odor on your breath; but they can also dry out your mouth causing an increase in the number and type of dangerous bacteria. That explains why Smokers develop gum disease, which can also add to halitosis.

  • Other chronic systemic conditions: Halitosis is most often caused by something happening in your mouth, it may also be a sign of gastric reflux, diabetes, liver or kidney disease along with other infections such as viral or fungal lip n mouth infections.

How to handle halitosis

The first thing to reinforce if you notice your breath has been less than fresh lately is to start a proper dental routine. Brush twice and do not rush it folks! Give it 2 minutes of your day at least twice daily and Invest in a good fluoride toothpaste and floss.

If bad breath persists, check in with your dentist. Together, we can track down what could be the probable cause. With a proper cleaning (scaling and polishing ) and fillings if necessary, your dentist can help rule out any oral health problems and advise you on next steps, which includes the type of dental products to use, treatment plans to take care of cavities or gum disease or refer you to a medical provider to follow up if we suspect any systemic disease.
