Our teeth are made of enamel, dentin and pulp . The top most layer enamel is translucent white and dentin as a yellowish hue. As a result it’s perfectly normal to have yellowish teeth.
But how do we determine ‘ normal ‘?
That depends on a lot of facts like the age, oral habits , diet etc
Causes of discoloration can be broadly classified into
1. Diet
Food and drinks that are acidic and use colour are generally the major culprits. Consumption of coffee, tea wine, colas, etc. on a regular basis causes yellowish to brownish stains on the teeth
2. Tobacco
Any form of tobacco, whether chewed or smoked, causes major changes on your body and it starts right in the mouth. Apart from major diseases like cancer, it reduces the shine of your pearly whites to yellow-brown colour.
3. Poor oral hygiene
Not having an oral hygiene routine causes the accumulation of plaque on the teeth, which is originally yellow. The more you neglect your teeth, the yellower it becomes.
4. Improper brushing
Contrary to the general belief, excessive force while brushing does not whiten your teeth. The use of charcoal on a hard brush does more harm than good. Remember that your enamel is probably 1.5 mm to 2mm thick and if that wears off, your dentin shows which are inherently yellowish.
5. Diseases
Certain developmental diseases which affect the enamel and dentin can cause dark or white spots on the teeth such as fluorosis.
6. Medications
Certain medications or treatment modalities can cause discoloration on the teeth such a chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
