When you research braces, you may come across self-ligating braces, sometimes referred to by brand names. They look similar to traditional metal braces but hold the wire in a different way. Patients often ask whether they are faster, more comfortable or easier to clean. Here is what you need to know.
In conventional braces, the archwire sits in a slot on each bracket and is held in place by a tiny elastic band, called a ligature, or a thin metal tie. These ligatures are changed at each adjustment appointment, and many patients enjoy choosing coloured bands.
Self-ligating brackets have a built-in clip or sliding door that holds the wire in place, so no elastic ligatures are needed. Some designs allow the wire to slide more freely, while others press it actively into the slot. Adjustments involve opening the clip, changing the wire and closing it again.
Without elastic ties, there are fewer places for plaque and food to collect, which can make cleaning a little easier. Adjustment appointments may be quicker, and some patients find them slightly more comfortable. Because there are no coloured bands, they can look a little neater.
Self-ligating braces are sometimes promoted as significantly faster. Independent studies have generally found that overall treatment time and final results are similar to well-managed traditional braces. The skill of the orthodontist, the complexity of the case and patient cooperation have a far bigger impact on treatment time than bracket type.
Both systems are effective and widely used. Cost, availability, your specific bite problem and your dentist's experience all influence which is recommended. The most important factor is a clear treatment plan and consistent care, including good brushing and attending every appointment.
Research suggests treatment time is broadly similar to traditional braces. Case complexity and patient cooperation matter more.
Some patients find them slightly more comfortable, but both types cause some soreness after adjustments.
They are sometimes priced slightly higher because the brackets are more complex. Your dentist will explain the options available.
