Teething is a milestone every parent goes through, and it can bring sleepless nights and fussy days. Understanding when teeth usually appear, what symptoms are normal and which remedies are safe can make the process easier for you and your baby. It is also the perfect time to start good oral care habits.
Most babies get their first tooth between six and ten months, usually the lower front teeth. The upper front teeth follow, then the side teeth, first molars, canines and finally the second molars. Most children have all twenty baby teeth by around two and a half to three years. Every child is different, and some teeth arrive earlier or later.
Teething can cause drooling, chewing on objects, irritability, swollen gums and disturbed sleep. Some babies have a slightly raised temperature. High fever, diarrhoea or severe illness are not caused by teething and should be checked by a doctor.
Gently massaging the gums with a clean finger, offering a chilled, not frozen, teething ring, and giving extra cuddles can help. For older babies already eating solids, cool, soft foods may soothe. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using any medication or gel.
Avoid teething necklaces and bracelets, which pose choking and strangulation risks. Do not use gels containing ingredients that are not recommended for infants, or rub alcohol or honey on gums. Avoid hard, frozen objects that could damage gums.
Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, using a soft infant toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste. Avoid putting your baby to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice. Book your child's first dental visit by their first birthday.
